League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Riot Games. It is a free-to-play game supported by micro-transactions and inspired by the mod Defense of the Ancients game mod for the video game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (essentially a game inspired by a game, based on another game).

Gameplay
Players assume the role of a “champion” with unique abilities and battles against a team of other players or computer-controlled champions. In competitions, the goal is to destroy the opposing team’s “nexus”, a building which lies at the heart of a base protected by defensive structures.
Popularity and Competitive Scene
League of Legends has grown in popularity with over 67 million people playing it each month, 27 million each day, and over 7.5 million in real-time during peak hours. With so many players it’s no surprise that LoL has a large and active competitive eSports scene. The League of Legends Championship Series consists of ten professional teams in both North America and Europe; similarly competitions exist in Eastern and SouthEast Asia. This all culminates with the annual League of Legends World Championship with prize money in the millions of dollars ($2.3 million dollars in 2014). With kind of money on the line, it’s no surprise that betting on eSports has also seen a rise.
